Food transcends its role as mere daily nourishment, embodies emotional comfort, social bonds, and regional cultural heritage.
“BOOK A TABLE • FOOD FOR THOUGHT” represented our response to the annual theme of the Hong Kong Book Fair 2025: “Reading the World: Food Culture . Future Living”. The exhibition delves into the intricate relationships between food culture, dining customs, and cultural identity, revealing how the dining experience, habit, and ritual of eating serve as a powerful platform for social connection and cultural dialogue.
Through a thoughtfully curated program featuring interactive displays, guided tours, workshops and seminars, the exhibition chronicles the evolution of dining from a basic necessity to a sophisticated cultural ritual. It explores how dining experiences vary across different life contexts, shaping memories and reflecting social dynamics. The exhibition also addresses critical contemporary issues such as food waste and sustainability, and encourages visitors to reconsider how their dietary choices today can influence their living in future.

What would a restaurant for books look like in a book fair?
The exhibition reimagined the reading experience as a curated dining journey, merging traditional and contemporary eating practices into a cohesive spatial narrative.
Upon arrival, visitors make a reservation through the Dining Personality Study. Through questions about cuisine preferences and dining atmosphere, these everyday choices reveal unique dining personalities. Each personality represents different attitudes toward life and value systems, reflecting the intimate relationship between food and lifestyle. Upon successful reservation, a ticket with a personalized table number is printed, directing visitors to their corresponding dining experience.

Eight cascading lazy susan tables combine the formal structure of high table dinners with Chinese food-sharing culture, revealing eight distinct dining personalities and experiences.
From tangible artifacts including dining vessels and agricultural tools to visual narratives and musical compositions, eight artists collaborate with the curatorial team and consulates general in Hong Kong to orchestrate a cross-disciplinary cultural feast at each table. Alongside these installations, a curated literature collection of books, recipes, vintage food magazines, and cookbooks share culinary wisdom cultivated across regions and generations.
Visitors redeem an “Irresponsible Recipe” corresponding to their dining personality at the reception by the end. One side features an irresponsible recipe for the mind, including personality traits, reflections, and recommended books. The reverse shares a responsible recipe for the body, presenting soul food aligned with each personality, from light desserts and cocktails to sharing dishes and cuisines from around the world. Visitors are also invited to keep a digital artefact of their imaginative dining experience at the AI photo booth.
Book Monsters and the Food Lab
The exhibition graphic identity embraces the whimsical concept of “Book Monsters” for the book fair. These fantastical creatures symbolize the diverse ways in which we consume literature, reflecting various nations and their unique food cultures. Each Book Monster takes on different shapes and forms, adding an element of playfulness that invites visitors to explore the joyful intersection of reading and culinary traditions.
As the Book Monsters devour books, they transform the written word into vibrant letters within their bellies. This visual metaphor illustrates the reading and learning process, where strings of words evolve into knowledge after being digested. It highlights the transformative power of literature, emphasizing that every bite of a book enriches our understanding of the world.

The exhibition space echoes a lab-like interior design, utilizing a clean, white color scheme that promotes clarity and focus. Metallic edges, strategic lighting with reflective surfaces, and translucent acrylic panels invoke a futuristic sensation alongside digital media. The interplay of cool greys and pale wood provides tactile contrast, evoking the warm and cozy moment of curling up with a good book.
Accented by bold, bright orange elements, the design injects vibrancy and energy into the space, encouraging interaction and engagement among visitors. This striking contrast not only enhances the playful nature of the Book Monsters but also creates an inviting atmosphere that celebrates the joy of reading and cultural exchange.

“BOOK A TABLE • FOOD FOR THOUGHT” creates an immersive experience that captivates the imagination, fosters curiosity, and highlights the delicious relationship between food, culture, and literature at the book fair. It offers visitors an intimate lens into society, exploring themes of cultural identity, social relationships, and the evolution of food culture in our interconnected world, while prompting reflection on personal eating habits and awareness in daily life.
